IPC football fans, grab your popcorn! IPC football fans test their prediction skills in The Sentinel’s first Friday Night Forecast of the 2025 season.

Hunter Eastin and Landon Carlisle block each other

Photo: Sentinel/Clark Brooks

Monticello’s Landon Carlisle tries to keep Unity’s Hunter Eastin from making a play during their Class 3A state semifinal game in 2024. Eastin has moved on, but Carlisle, now a sophomore, will be back to help the Sages contend for the top of the Illini Prairie Conference. Both programs received unanimous picks to win this week’s season opener in the Friday Night Forecast.

URBANA - Ladies and gentlemen, football fans of Illini Prairie—brace yourselves! The Sentinel is kicking off the very first season of the Friday Night Forecast, and the stakes are higher than ever. We welcome four brave challengers—Alan, J, Denise, and Sara—ready to test their prediction skills and claim glory! But standing in their way is none other than Clark Brooks, Champaign-Urbana’s very own oracle of the gridiron, a titan of pigskin prophecy whose foresight has baffled, amazed, and humbled even the boldest fans.

Grab your umbrellas, grab your popcorn, and get ready for a clash of football wits! Here are the picks from the Sentinel’s inaugural Friday Night Forecast.

P.S. Best of luck to all IPC football programs this season—may your dedication, off-season training, and pursuit of excellence shine on the field!

Week 1 predictions

Illini Prairie Game of the Week
Paxton-Buckley-Loda vs Central Catholic

Alan: Central Catholic .::. 28-7
Denise: Central Catholic .::. 14-7
J: Central Catholic .::. 21-6
Sara: Paxton-Buckley-Loda .::. 27-26

Brooks Look: Last fall, Paxton-Buckley-Loda (7-4) shocked BCC (5-5), winning in overtime, 22-21. The Panthers will be without quarterback Conner Vaughn and Robert Boyd-Meents, who piled up 186 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries in the IPC thriller. Considering that the Saints haven’t posted a win in their last two visits to Paxton, and both programs are 2-2 since the dark days of COVID, PBL - with home-field advantage - takes this one, no overtime needed, with a second-half comeback.

Paxton-Buckley-Loda 28, Central Catholic 21

Pontiac @ Coal City

Alan: Pontiac .::. 14-12
Denise: Pontiac .::. 28-14
J: Coal City .::. 35-6
Sara: Coal City .::. 40-14

Brooks Look: Pontiac returns just three starters on both sides of the ball from last year’s one-win season. The Indians, who have won four games in as many years, are rebuilding under former Unity star - and now Athletic Director and head coach - Zach Gadbury. Coal City, stocked with 17 seniors, finished 2024 with a respectable 10-3 record. Bench depth and experience should give them the edge here.

Coal City 42, Pontiac 14

Unity vs Rantoul

Alan: Unity .::. 28-14
Denise: Unity .::. 32-7
J: Unity .::. 49-0
Sara: Unity .::. 39-6

Brooks Look: Improving from an 0-9 season in 2023 to 1-8 last year with a win over Pontiac, Rantoul faces a team hungry for a trip to the Class 3A state title game after a heartbreaking semifinal loss to Monticello last November. Unity’s tradition and culture of winning won’t be tested in their home season opener. Look for Rocket quarterback Dane Eisenmenger to put up big numbers early.

Unity 49, Rantoul 13

Prairie Central vs St. Joseph-Ogden

Alan: St. Joseph-Ogden .::. 28-7
Denise: St. Joseph-Ogden .::. 28-21
J: St. Joseph-Ogden .::. 35-7
Sara: St. Joseph-Ogden .::. 48-21

Brooks Look: This game has the markings of a shootout, with Prairie Central’s Dalton Steidinger on one side of the ball and St. Joseph-Ogden’s Kodey McKinney on the other. Even with Steidinger passing for 992 yards last fall, the Hawks finished 5-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play. McKinney, on the other hand, hoarded 2,351 yards, resulting in 29 touchdowns, and led SJO to an undefeated conference run. If Prairie Central can’t contain SJO’s passing game and stop Wyatt Wertz on the ground, this could easily turn into a lopsided affair.

St. Joseph-Ogden 35, Prairie Central 16

IVC vs Monticello

Alan: Illinois Valley Central .::. 35-32
Denise: Monticello .::. 21-14
J: Monticello .::. 21-14
Sara: Monticello .::. 32-27

Brooks Look:Illinois Valley Central (3-6) won three of its last four games at the end of the 2024 season and will give the Sages a run for their money early in the home opener. However, the Class 3A runner-up will shake off first-quarter jitters as last year’s juniors and sophomores adjust to their new roles before picking up where the team left off in November.

Monticello 42, IVC 21

Unity soccer drops season debut, hosts St. Teresa next

Unity soccer dropped its opener 7-0 at Newton and returns home Tuesday to face St. Teresa in nonconference play.

NEWTON - Unity struggled to find its footing in its season debut, falling 7-0 to Newton on the road Monday. The Rockets managed just one shot on goal in the 80-minute contest as the Eagles, last year’s Little Illini Conference champions, controlled possession throughout.

Newton broke through early with goals from Samuel Rodriguez, Lance Volk, and freshman Daniel Falcioni, who added another in the second half. Anderson converted a penalty kick, while junior Henry Will scored in each half to round out the attack.

Unity's Tyler Huntington dribbles the ball in last regional semifinal against Monticello. He is one of five seniors leading the Rockets this season.

The Eagles, who finished 10-7-1 last season and went unbeaten in league play, return a deep roster of 21 players this fall.

Unity, coming off an 8-8-3 finish in 2024 and a fourth-place showing in the Illini Prairie Conference, has a mix of veterans and underclassmen looking to grow into bigger roles. Seniors Matthew Hollett, Tyler Huntington, McCaskill, Caden, and Emma Swisher anchor the lineup. Sophomores Joel Hoewing, Ian Skibbe, Logan Wells, and Jack White join the rotation along with freshman contributors Kenny Adcock, Konnor Bletscher, Luc Popovics, Dylan Stierwalt, Javy Zavala, and Ethan Zgura. Carter Cromwell is the squad’s lone member of the Class of 2027.

The Rockets won two league matches last year, defeating Monticello and Illinois Valley Central, and will look to build consistency in nonconference play. They return to action this afternoon, hosting St. Teresa (1-0) at 4:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday home match against Argenta-Oreana.

    Unity alumna remembered; Savannah Day Memorial Race this Friday

    Celebrate Savannah Day’s legacy with a 2.96-mile walk/run Friday in Sidney. All proceeds go to a girls’ athletics scholarship.

    SIDNEY - The memory of Savannah Day will be honored this Friday evening as runners and walkers gather for the annual Savannah Day 2.96 Memorial Run/Walk. The race, which steps off at 7 p.m. on July 25, 2025, serves as both a tribute and a fundraiser, celebrating the life and passion of a young woman whose dedication to athletics and community continues to inspire.

    Savannah Day heads to the finish line at the 2016 IHSA Girls Cross Country State Finals, helping the Rockets to a second-place finish. Friday's race in Sidney will celebrate her legacy and help raise funds for the Savannah Day Girls Athletic Scholarship.

    Savannah Day, an 18-year-old college freshman studying kinesiology, tragically lost her life in a car-train collision on October 3, 2018. The accident occurred just south of St. Joseph as she returned home from cross-country practice at Danville Area Community College. Her death sent shockwaves through the community and the broader running world, particularly among those who knew her from her standout high school career.

    Day was a key contributor to Unity High School’s cross-country and track programs, helping lead the Rockets to IHSA Class 1A cross-country state titles in both 2015 and 2017. Known for her bright spirit, kind heart, and boundless energy, Savannah’s impact extended well beyond the course. "It's a sad day for our school, our community and everyone who was fortunate to know Savannah and her smile," said former Unity Athletic Director Scott Hamilton told The News-Gazette following her passing.

    The memorial event was created to honor her legacy and raise funds for the Savannah Day Girls Athletic Scholarship. All proceeds from the race directly support the scholarship, which benefits local female athletes pursuing their academic and athletic goals — just as Savannah did.

    Same-day registration will be available at the event site beginning at 5:30 p.m. There is no additional fee for registering late. While pre-registration officially closed on July 16, participants may still sign up by emailing their form to savannahday2.96@gmail.com and submitting the $25 fee via Venmo. Forms can also be downloaded and mailed to the race address with payment.

    Support for the memorial run continues to grow, with this year’s event made possible by generous sponsorships from the Town of Sidney, InsureChampaign, Sidney Fire Department, Spring Green of St. Joseph, The Sidney Saloon, Center For Your Health in Philo, Don’s Auto Center in Homer, Castle Home Comfort Heating & Air of Champaign, The Artega Insurance Group - Country Financial, IGA in St. Joseph, Winstons Old Bank in Sidney, and Sidney Dairy Barn.

    Still running, Unity's Emily Decker continues running career at Ball State University

    This fall, one of the Rockets' most-decorated athletes, a medalist in track & field and cross country, plans to continue making strides in athletics and academics at Ball State.

    by Dan Chamness

    At one point during the last 18 months, recent Tolono Unity graduate Emily Decker did not know if she wanted to continue her collegiate athletic career in cross country and track and field.

    But, the Ball State University coaching staff can be very convincing.

    Unity track star Emily Decker running in the 1600m race
    Sentinel/Clark Brooks

    Unity's Emily Decker crosses the finish line of the Class 2A 1600m Run. The senior earned a medal, finishing fourth in Class 2A with a time of 5:02.99. With several options to choose from, the Rockets' four-year varsity runner decided to continue her running career at Ball State.

    "I chose Ball State because they really made me feel wanted," said Decker of the Muncie, Indiana-based school. I did not know for sure if I wanted to continue, but the coaches and my future teammates understood my apprehension about competing in college."

    Indiana State University and Illinois State University, also NCAA Division I teams, also showed interest in the multi-sport Rocket athlete.

    "Since I was undecided for a bit, it limited the number of schools that I spoke with," said Decker. "I am currently on a training plan that my coaches at Ball State (Adrian Wheatley, Rachel Nichwitz) have sent me. I am trying to stay fit mentally and physically. Right now, I am running six days a week. I also cross train, usually biking. I also lift weights three or four times a week."

    Decker put herself on the map of any college watching the state finals in either cross country or track from her freshman year. She would help Tolono Unity win three cross country state championships in the Illinois High School Association Class 1A Finals. They were second during her senior season.

    Two of those state title wins were in dominating fashion. As a sophomore, she finished 19th and was the second scoring runner. The Rockets would win by 101 points, scoring only 84 points. Chicago-based DePaul College Prep finished with 185 points to take second. They would make it a three-peat in 2023, scoring 109 points to win by 48 points. Anna-Jonesboro took second with 157 points.

    "When we won my freshman year, it was pretty sweet, because no one expected us to win," recalled Decker.

    Three years and approximately six months after helping the Lady Rockets earn a trophy every year of her career in cross country, she would be instrumental in helping them earn their first track trophy of her career. They would finish second in the state in the IHSA Class 2A Finals. The only girl's team in the state of Illinois in Class 2A Division was fellow Central Illinois team, Normal University High. Unity would finish with a total of 49 points, while University High had 64.

    Personally, Decker entered the track state finals her senior year with a medal count of six, three in cross country and three more in track and field. By the time the state meet was over at 5 p.m. on May 24, Decker had upped her career medal count to nine. She would not only collect her fourth consecutive medal in the 3,200-meter relay, as the Rockets started their running day with a state title in the event. Individually, she would finish third in the 3,200-meter run and fourth in the 1,600-meter run as a senior.

    While most of the athletes on the Ball State women's cross country team are from the state of Indiana, there is one from Illinois currently on the team in Batavia's Jenna Schifferer, who is slated to return for her senior year. There is no men's cross country team at Ball State, only a women's team. The same for track as the Cardinals only have a women's team.

    Unity's Emily Decker runs to a 4th place state finish

    Photo: Sentinel/Clark Brooks

    Decker runs with the main pack in the title race of the 1600m run at the 2025 IHSA state meet.

    Of the 12 runners contributing on varsity for the Ball State cross country team, only four were seniors. Eight are slated to return.

    In 2024, in the sport of cross country, the BSU Cardinals finished seventh of the 12 teams in the Mid-American Conference. They would finish 17th of the 32 teams in the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional. In the winter of 2025, they were fourth of the dozen teams in the MAC Indoor Championships. In outdoor, they finished eighth.

    "I am eager to run those collegiate distances and also try out some different events," said Decker. "The 3,000-meter steeplechase is an event that looks cool and I might try that. I have always liked the further distances and I am eager to see how I do at them."

    The daughter of Bill and Julie Decker of Philo will be seeking a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Besides her athletic exploits in running, she was also a member of the Lady Rocket basketball team and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). At Unity, she has received an academic letter for all four years for her achievements in the classroom.

    "The entire community was geared toward helping us succeed," said Decker. "That is what I will miss the most. The unwavering support from everyone, the community, my teammates, the entire school and the coaches. I can't imagine anyplace being more supportive overall."
